Ladang Subang estate workers to finally get new homes

SHAH ALAM: Estate workers at Ladang Subang here can finally breathe a sigh of relief after having persevered for 14 years in order to stay on the estate.

This struggle started after Sime Darby sold the estate to developers who wanted the workers living there to move.

PSM, who was sympathetic to the workers, took up the cause and this started a negotiation process that has lasted for more than a decade.

The negotiations between the estate workers, PSM, Sime Darby and the developers finally resulted in the workers only having to pay a total of RM3,000 for their new homes which will be built on the same estate.

On top of that, the RM3,000 will only have to be paid in installments of RM300 a month. The first payment was made on Sunday.

PSM leader Nasir Hashim said the estate workers proved that perseverance in the fight for one’s rights can bring about change.

“It is truly a joy to know that today you’re able to get a house for just RM3,000,” he said at a thanksgiving ceremony organised by the workers for PSM.

“Tell your children and your grandchildren that this is our country and we have to fight for what is best for our families.”

At the press conference earlier, Nasir said he believed the reason the developers finally gave in to the workers’ demand was because the fight had lasted so long that they decided to cut their losses.

PSM secretary-general A Sivarajan said the developer’s offer could also be due to the fact that the workers were insistent about not wanting to move.

Whatever the reason, Nasir hopes this can be an example for other estates facing the same issues.

“Although, I am no longer assemblyman for Kota Damansara, I had been their representative while this issue was ongoing and I didn’t want to act as though it was no longer my problem.

“Now there are no more estates facing issues in Kota Damansara but there are other estates in other constituencies and I hope what happened here can be an example of how their problems can be solved too,” Nasir said.

Nasir was Kota Damansara assemblyman between 2008 to 2013. Ladang Subang falls within the Kota Damansara state constituency.
