KUALA LUMPUR:
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar believes that the policeman who was stabbed near a restaurant during a scuffle yesterday may have been wrongly targeted.

“We are currently investigating to see if the attackers had stabbed the wrong person,” he told reporters today at a press conference in Bukit Aman here.

Khalid said the victim, a Bukit Aman Special Action Unit (UTK) officer, happened to be at the scene when the fight broke out.

Yesterday, a 26-year-old policeman was stabbed over a misunderstanding that arose when he ordered a roti canai from the suspect at a restaurant in Selayang.

The policeman was believed to have mistaken the suspect for a waiter there.

The suspect’s friend however was alleged to have reacted to the request by making an obscene gesture at the policeman.

The caused the policemen to chase after the duo which led soon after to a scuffle between the policemen and the suspect.

The suspect and his friend, both aged 24, have since been arrested.

Khalid added that police were still looking for other suspects believed to be involved in the incident.

He said the policeman, who is currently hospitalised at Selayang Hospital, is in stable condition.

“We hope he recovers soon.”
