KUALA LUMPUR: A painter was sentenced to five years’ jail and two strokes of the rotan by the Ampang Sessions Court for stealing a mobile phone.
Judge Azrul Darus ordered Haryanto Arsah, 23, who pleaded guilty, to start serving his prison sentence from the date of his arrest on Dec 27.
Haryanto had snatched the iPhone 7 Plus worth RM4,500 belonging to a 17-year-old student at the LRT Pandan Indah Station staircase at 11.30pm on Dec 26.
The accused, who was not represented, had pleaded for leniency saying he had committed the offence out of desperation.
He claimed he had not been paid his wages for two months and that his wife was going to deliver their second child on Jan 12.
According to the facts of the case, when the victim and his friend were coming down the stairs at the Pandan Indah LRT station, the victim’s smartphone was suddenly snatched from behind by the accused.
The accused, who fled into a nearby residential area, was caught with the help of the public.
