PETALING JAYA: PKR’s Zuraida Kamaruddin wants a review of all the court cases involving underage marriages over which Tasik Gelugor MP Shabudin Yahya presided during his time as a shariah court judge.
“Shabudin must take responsibility for any grievances arising from these marriages,” she said.
The Ampang MP had previously called Shabudin “delusional” after the Umno MP told the Dewan Rakyat two days ago that there was nothing wrong with a minor getting married to her rapist.
Shabudin had also said that it would be good for the girl as she would otherwise face a bleak future. He added that some girls matured fast and looked older than their age.
“They reach puberty at the age of nine, or 12. And at that time, the physical state of their body is already akin to those who are 18 years old.
“So physically and spiritually, it is not a barrier for the girl to marry,” Shabudin had said.
Yesterday, Zuraida cited recorded testimonies from child brides who said they had been forced into marriage by their guardians, adding that such a situation was simply wrong.
In a statement today, she expressed hope that the underage girls over whose cases Shabudin had presided would have the courage to step forward and give their views on child marriage.
These women should be given justice, she added.
