Cops question DAP MP over youth forum on ‘Saving Malaysia’

GEORGE TOWN: Exactly one year after being a panellist at a youth forum in Penang last year, Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto was called up to give a statement today by the police.

Her lawyer RSN Rayer said that a police report was filed against her over the forum entitled “Forum Deklarasi Rakyat Suara Anak Muda Selamatkan Malaysia”, held here on April 12 last year.

She is being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012, Rayer told reporters outside the Patani Road police station here today.

“I attended the forum too but I don’t know who organised it. She is being investigated for being part of the panel.

“Tomorrow, Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim will be questioned as well on the same forum,” Rayer said, adding that Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh would be accompanying Sim.

According to Rayer, neither Sim nor Kasthuri was involved in organising the forum.

After giving her statement, Kasthuri took to Facebook to voice out against the investigation of the forum and its panellists.

“Done with giving my statement to the investigating officer (IO). It appears that I’m being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2011 for a forum that took place in a closed area.

“Is a permit needed for a forum in a closed area?” Kasthuri said, adding however, that the IO was very professional, honest and had been dutiful in asking her the questions.

“I can’t help but feel that this is a tactic of intimidation by the powers that be to silence voices of dissent.”
