JOHOR BAHRU: A private religious school pupil whose legs turned black after he was allegedly assaulted by a warden, has been confirmed to have lapsed into a coma yesterday.

News of the incident went viral on social media yesterday.

Johor Health, Environment, Education and Information Committee chairman Ayub Rahmat said Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gaddafi, 11, underwent a double amputation of the legs on Friday to prevent infection to tissues and blood cells.

In a statement here yesterday, he said the victim’s right hand had also turned black from infection.

Mohamad Thaqif Amin, who was admitted to the Hospital Sultan Ismail (HSI) on Wednesday, was reportedly experiencing pain in his legs for two weeks after being caned by an assistant warden.

Ayub said HSI was doing all it could to give the best service to the boy whose condition he described as “critical”.

He said the HSI was also trying to determine if the pupil had other illnesses related to the beating, adding that the victim’s mother had taken him for traditional treatment before admitting him to hospital.

“Mohamad Thaqif Amin has congealed blood and an infection which has spread to his kidneys and damaged (it).

“The problem of congealed blood was not only in his legs but also his hands.

“We were informed the patient’s legs had been amputated and dialysis was being carried out while a police report has also been lodged,” he added.
