Cops shoot man during high-speed chase

Othman-Nanyan-polis-tembakPETALING JAYA: A man was injured after being shot at by the police during a high-speed chase near Taman Connaught in Cheras today.

The man was riding pillion on a motorcycle with his accomplice during the incident, reported the News Straits Times.

Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Othman Nanyan said the man had a string of criminal records and his accomplice was also a hardened criminal with 11 past criminal records.

“The chase started from a highway near Taman Connaught in Cheras to the Giant hypermarket in Batu 9,” said Othman.

He said the pillion rider whipped out a pistol-like object and fired at the police near the hypermarket, narrowly missing the patrol car.

“The policemen in the patrol car returned fire but the two men sped off,” he said.

Othman said the rider however suddenly lost control of the motorcycle and crashed in Jalan Cheras Baru.

He said the police team arrived at the scene and detained the duo.

Othman said the pillion rider, who was injured in his arm and abdomen, was sent to Ampang Hospital for treatment.

He said the gun used by the pillion rider was a homemade pistol with four bullets.
