Food stall workers hijack Penang council truck during raid

Two-seafood-stall1GEORGE TOWN: Two seafood stall workers turned the tables on raiding city council officers after they took off with a council lorry ready to seize items from their illegal stall close to the Gurney Drive area here last night.

In the 8.50pm incident, two men who are believed to be workers at the seafood stall at Jalan Tanjung Tokong got into a heated argument with about a dozen Penang Island City Council officers who had arrived in a lorry.

The council enforcement officers had wanted to seize their items as they were not licensed and were operating illegally.

The two workers in their 20s then rushed into the city council lorry which had its engine running and drove off.

They then drove for about 2km to the Pulau Tikus police station, with the co-driver filming the entire trip for about three minutes.

In a video recorded by one of the two men who hijacked the lorry, a man in a cap was seen screaming expletives.

The man in his 20s was seen slamming the city council for kicking them out from their business.

“P***** punya Guan Eng, kedai Cina, p**** kau tak halau, kedai Melayu kau nak halau,” the man was heard saying in the 2.50-min video.

They were tailed by council officers on motorcycles, asking them to stop, but they did not.

The two men then parked the lorry at the entrance of the Pulau Tikus police station and lodged a report against the city council for harassing them and their business.

In a police report sighted, a 27-year-old worker from the seafood stall claimed the city council officers were rude and had come unannounced.

The man said he had applied for a city council licence thrice but was yet to be issued one.

He said he then “bertindak” (acted) to drive the city council lorry away, in an attempt to stop the council officers from seizing items from their business.

“I am lodging this report because I am unhappy with the way that the city council treats Bumiputera Malays,” he said.

The city council has not responded to queries for comment at the time of writing, while police officers met say the matter is still being investigated.

It was learnt that the duo have been arrested for their act.
