GEORGE TOWN: Eight men believed to be members of Gang 04 were arrested in an operation at Lebuh King here last night.
North-East district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said the eight, aged between 18 and 27, were apprehended and eight long machetes believed to have been used during riots and fights, were recovered.
“In the mini-Thaipusam procession in George Town from Tuesday to Thursday, police received two reports of rioting involving Indian groups hurting people.
“In the first incident in Lorong Stewart on Wednesday, a man was injured, while in the second incident on the same day at the Datuk Keramat traffic lights, two people were injured.
“The incidents were believed to have been carried out by Gang 04,” he said here today.
He said two of the eight men had criminal records for murder and all eight were screened positive for drugs.
Anuar said police were tracking down several more members of the gang suspected to be involved in the riots.
