PWD engineer charged with misusing his power

JOHOR BAHRU: A former engineer with the Kulai district Public Works Department (PWD) was charged in the Johor Bahru Sessions Court today with misusing his power in 2015.

Azizan Mohamed Yasin, 38, pleaded not guilty to using his position to appoint G Two Amiruddin Trading, a company in which his elder brother, Azizi Mohamed Yassin, had a stake, to carry out grass-cutting and cleaning work along certain roads in Kulai for RM19,750.

The accused, who is now a senior assistant director (consultation, asset management division, planning branch) at the PWD headquarters, faces Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

Upon conviction, the charge carries a sentence of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the amount involved or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Judge Mohd Fauzi Mohd Nasir set RM20,000 as bail in one surety and two other conditions.

Azizan must surrender his international passport to the court and report to the Johor MACC headquarters monthly.

The court fixed July 31 for re-mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Khazrin Haffiz Khalil appeared for the prosecution while counsel Iskandar Shah Ibrahim represented the accused.
