PETALING JAYA: PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil has denied a report that stated the party had agreed to Dr Mahathir Mohamad leading the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition as its chairman.
Responding to a report on Malaysian Insight that a PKR political bureau meeting last night had made the decision, Fahmi sent out a message on Twitter saying it was “not accurate”.
“Sorry, but that story about the PKR political bureau meeting was not accurate. Discussions are still ongoing. An official announcement will be made at the PH presidential council meeting,” Fahmi said.
According to the report, PKR had agreed to the PPBM chairman taking on the same role in the opposition coalition to “enhance their prospects in the next general election”.
“The political bureau agreed to have Dr Mahathir as PH chairman while Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will be the president,” a PKR source told MI, adding that PKR’s de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim will be PH adviser.
The same source revealed that the respective party leaders – PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin – will be PH deputy presidents.
It was reported previously that Anwar had wanted Wan Azizah to be the PH chairman.
The line-up for the PH leadership needs to be finalised in order for the pact to be officially registered by the Registrar of Societies, with a view to contesting in the next general election under one logo.
The Pakatan Harapan coalition which was formed by PKR, Amanah and DAP in 2015 admitted PPBM as an official component in March this year.
