Panther dies after being hit by vehicle


KUANTAN: A male panther weighing about 50kg was found dead at the Central Spine Road near Sungai Yu in Merapoh yesterday after it was believed to have been hit by a vehicle.

Pahang Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Ahmad Azhar Mohammed said the department received a call from a passer-by regarding the incident at 10.50am.

“The Lipis Perhilitan personnel immediately rushed to the scene after receiving the call and found the panther’s carcass on the road shoulder, about eight kilometres away from the Sungai Yu Eco-Viaduct (special pathway for animal crossings),” he said when contacted here today.

Ahmad Azhar said the panther, believed to be between 10 and 12 years of age, had sustained multiple injuries.

The animal’s carcass was taken to the Lanchang Biodiversity Institute for a post-mortem.
