KUALA LUMPUR: Umno’s Syed Ali Alhabshee has called on DAP to follow Umno’s example, by complying with the directive of the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to have its central executive committee (CEC) election held again.
The Cheras division chief said when Umno had been determined by the courts to be unlawful in 1987 the party had gone along with the decision.
He said if DAP considered itself to be a clean party, its leadership should not fear the RoS order and look for excuses to challenge it.
“DAP must accept the fact that when the RoS says there should be re-election, they should have the election again,” he told reporters at the Cheras Umno delegates conference here today.
He said when Umno was declared illegal in 1987, it was set up anew (as Umno Baru), and DAP should likewise heed the authorities and have its polls again.
In a statement yesterday, RoS director-general Mohammad Razin Abdullah said DAP should conduct fresh elections in light of complaints by DAP members dissatisfied with the party’s re-election on Sept 29, 2013.
“RoS believes the appointment of the CEC members as well as the main position holders through that re-election, is illegal,” he said.
He also said the RoS considered DAP to be a legitimate party and had no intentions to de-register it so far.
Syed Ali criticised DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang for labelling the directive as “ridiculous” when the move had been deemed as necessary by the authorities.
He said the action of DAP leaders, including Lim, in questioning the RoS was proof that they were afraid of losing the influence of the “dictator” in the party.
“This Kit Siang is only good at talking,” Syed Ali said, claiming that Lim, who often criticised the government, played a different tune when he himself was at the receiving end.
He also hit out at DAP leaders who accused the Umno government of having a hand in the move just because the RoS decision involved their party.
“Why would Umno want to influence the RoS? He (Lim) is certainly afraid that there may be changes if the election is held again because there are DAP members now who are fed up with the current leadership,” Syed Ali said.
