Drug suspect slips off cuffs and escapes on way to hospital


GEORGE TOWN: A police detainee who was being taken to a hospital for treatment escaped when the police van carrying him stopped along the way due to a brake failure on Jalan Paya Terubong early today.

Timur Laut district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said in the 2.30am incident, the detainee, identified as Anuar Ayat, 43, and two others from the Bayan Baru police lockup, accompanied by six policemen, were being sent to Balik Pulau Hospital for treatment after they complained of not feeling well.

“On arrival at the Relau traffic light intersection, the police van they were travelling in experienced brake failure and stopped by the roadside.

“The policemen were opening the van door when the detainee jumped out of the vehicle and fled.

“The policemen chased after him as well as searched for him in the area, but lost him,” he said.

Anuar said the detainee was handcuffed together with the other two detainees, but he had managed to free himself.

He said all the policemen who accompanied the suspect had been detained for questioning.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect and urged those with information on the suspect and/or his whereabouts to contact the police.

He said the suspect, from Permatang Damar Laut near here, was scheduled to appear in court tomorrow for a drug trafficking charge.
