Get help, Rapid Rail advises disabled in wheelchairs

KUALA LUMPUR: Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd has advised rail commuters on wheelchairs to seek assistance from station staff when entering and exiting the train to minimise risks of getting stuck in the platform gap.

Stressing that it was common knowledge that there is a gap between the platform floor and arriving trains, Rapid Rail chief executive officer Zohari Sulaiman said based on international standards, a maximum of 50mm gap between the platform and the train is allowed in order to ensure the smoothness of trains entering and exiting the station.

Hence, all commuters, including the strong and physically fit, are advised to always exercise caution and be alert at all times while waiting for trains at the station platform.

To ensure safety, he said there were repeated station announcements to remind commuters on the gap and for all commuters to be alert of the gap.

“People with disabilities can conveniently approach our PBs (Polis Bantuan) or any station staff at the platform for assistance.

“In the rare absence of the PB, please approach other fellow commuters for assistance when entering the trains,” he said in a statement today.

He was responding to a case highlighted by Kinrara assemblyman Ng Sze Han during a site visit at the Pusat Bandar Puchong LRT station on Thursday.

Earlier this year, the front wheel of Beautiful Gate Foundation for the Disabled (Puchong) executive superintendent Elaine Sia’s wheelchair got stuck in the platform gap at the station.

Zohari said that Rapid Rail had no authority over the type of wheelchair used by commuters and could not test every model in the market.

“We note that we did not try out each and every model of the wheelchairs available in the market. The wheelchairs used are those brought in by our relevant stakeholders,” he said.
Thus, commuters need to ensure that their wheelchairs are in good condition to ensure safe travel.

“When entering and exiting the train, commuters on wheelchairs must ensure that their wheels directly face the doors in a straight position.

“They should not enter or exit sideways, which naturally will add to the risk of the wheels falling into the gap.

“There is no need to rush when entering and exiting trains as there is sufficient time,” he said.

He also called passengers to share suggestions to improve Rapid’s services for the disabled community and said it was fully committed to ensure that its services were of world-class standards.
