PUTRAJAYA: Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman has accused PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli of deliberately trying to create friction within Umno.
The accusation follows Rafizi’s claim that even if Pakatan Harapan (PH) were to lose in the next general election, Prime Minister and Umno president Najib Razak would be toppled by his own party members.
In a live video published on his Facebook page recently, Rafizi said the assumption was based on surveys by Invoke, a PH policy research initiative, on the likely outcome of three-cornered fights in the next general election.
The findings, he said, showed that if the general election were to be held soon, and in the event of three-cornered fights, PH would be able to win 97 seats while the BN would be able to win 125 seats.
Tajuddin, however, said there was no indication that this would happen as there was strong support within Umno for its president.
“All I know is that Najib has strong support from Umno division leaders as well as at the grassroots level,” he told reporters at the agriculture and agro-based industry ministry’s Aidilfitri open house here today.
He questioned the validity of Invoke’s survey, saying: “This survey of Rafizi’s… I don’t think there’s any survey at all. He’s just trying to cause friction in Umno, trying to get us to fight with each other. That’s what he hopes will happen, but I guarantee it won’t.”
Tajuddin, who is also agriculture and agro-based industry deputy minister and Pasir Salak MP, also accused Rafizi of coming out with such statements in a “cheap effort” to gain popularity.
“He always makes stupid statements but everything he has said, all his accusations have been proven to be false. I myself have been a victim of his wild forecasts when he said I would lose in the 13th general election but it turned out my majority increased by 300%.
“In this particular case, I can tell you as a division chief and a supreme council member that the support for the prime minister is solid. All those who weren’t for him have left. Muhyiddin Yassin, Shafie Apdal, Mukhriz Mahathir, they’re not in Umno anymore.”
