Former Penang councillor remanded for alleged sexual assault

sexual-assaultGEORGE TOWN: A former municipal councillor from Penang has been remanded for two days for alleged sexual assault on a 21-year-old woman at a nightclub at Beach Street here last Thursday.

Clad in a white shirt, he bowed as he was brought to the Magistrate’s Court in handcuffs at about 10.30am, while press photographers snapped his picture.

Senior assistant registrar Ahmad Tajudin Zain later ordered that he be held in remand until tomorrow.

The alleged victim had lodged a police report on the incident at the Beach Street police station on Friday morning. A follow-up report explaining in detail what had purportedly happened was lodged on Tuesday.

Police are investigating the case under Section 354 of the Penal Code for assault or use of criminal force on a person with intent to outrage modesty.

If convicted, he faces a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine, whipping or any two of these punishments.

Police described the man’s occupation as an aide to a state assemblyman. The assemblyman however told vernacular Chinese papers that the man had resigned last month.

Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said the suspect turned himself in yesterday evening and was immediately placed under arrest and required to take a urine test.

According to the woman’s report, details of which have gone viral on social media, the man was in a drunken state when he allegedly took her to a car park, molested her and asked her to perform oral sex on him.

She claimed she had refused his advances but failed to stop him. When she started crying, the man masturbated and ejaculated on her, she alleged.

Later, the man allegedly offered her RM500 to RM700 to “spend the night” with him, but she refused and asked to be let go, she said in the report.
