GEORGE TOWN: Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad has lauded Lim Kit Siang as the best “pendakwah” (preacher), after the DAP supremo quoted verses from the Quran when admonishing Attorney-General Apandi Ali over the issue of 1MDB.
“I was startled to hear Kit Siang coming up with verses of the Quran to show Apandi Ali.
“This is something good. We do not need to ‘dakwah’ (do missionary work) with Kit Siang. Kit Siang has shown that in politics and lies, he can ‘dakwah’ to Apandi using the Quran.
“This is the best dakwah,” Mahathir, who is also PPBM chairman, said to applause from some 1,000 people at the party’s Hari Raya open house at Burma Road here today.
Also present were Kit Siang, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Penang PKR chief Mansor Othman, state Amanah chief Mujahid Yusof Rawa and state PPBM chief Marzuki Yahaya.
On Tuesday, Apandi said he only feared God when it came to discharging his duties. He said this when responding to Mahathir’s criticism that he had failed to take action on those complicit in the 1MDB issue.
He also described Mahathir as “childish” for calling on him to swear on the Quran in a mosque if he had indeed not found any wrongdoing by Prime Minister Najib Razak in the investigation into the 1MDB scandal.
Lim, in turn, quoted two verses from Surah al-Baqarah yesterday, one on what was right and what was wrong, and the other about causing mischief on Earth.
Mahathir said Apandi should be reminded that it was wrong to lie to God. He also dared Apandi to swear on the Quran that there were no crimes committed by the prime minister.
FMT has contacted Apandi for comment and is awaiting his reply.
