PAS: Excessive liquor, drugs main reasons for domestic violence

Nasrudin-Hassan-drunkKUALA LUMPUR: A PAS MP has urged the government to limit the sale of alcohol or restrict its sale to within closed doors.

Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi (PAS-Temerloh) said those who drank alcohol excessively were likely to be more aggressive.

“There are a lot of abuse cases on women due to excessive alcohol,” he said while debating the Domestic Violence (Amendment) Bill 2017 at the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said even the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital emergency department had reported abuse of alcohol as one of the reasons for physical abuse.

The PAS MP added that the government should look at all angles to solve the problem.

Another reason for domestic violence, he said, was drug abuse.

“Drugs are the same (as alcohol). It is still widespread. The government should do more to curb the problem.”

He added that abusers needed psychological therapy and spiritual guidance.

He said some of flats in the cities did not have enough places of worship, such as surau.

“Such characters (abusers) are loners and do not like to be controlled by others. The best way to treat them is to let them mingle around with neighbours.”

He added other reasons for domestic violence included jealously and the background of partners.
