PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) today dismissed a video clip showing an official apparently announcing the general election date in October as a “simulation” for the coming polls.
The less than one minute long video showing the official announcing Oct 13, 2017 as the date for the next polls in front of a group of EC officials has gone viral on social media.
“The fact is the viral video is a simulation training for EC officials,” according to an EC statement.
The agency said “irresponsible parties” had spread the claim that the 14th general election (GE14) would be held on the date mentioned.
“EC’s top management is considering making a police report against those who spread lies on social media to enable legal action to be taken,” it added.
The GE14 must be held by the middle of next year.
The last general election was held on May 5, 2013.
