‘Choosing Awang Adek as Mara head, honour for Kelantan-born’

KOTA BHARU: The appointment of Awang Adek Hussin as chairman of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) is proof of Prime Minister Najib Razak’s acknowledgement and recognition for eminent Kelantan-born personalities who excelled in their respective fields.

Kelantan Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Mustapa Mohamed said he welcomed and thanked the prime minister and Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob for Awang Adek’s appointment.

“Awang Adek’s appointment is apt considering his vast experience, as ambassador to the United States (2014-2016), deputy finance minister (2006-2013), deputy rural and regional development minister (2004-2006) and assistant governor of Bank Negara (1996-2001),” he said in a statement today.

Mustapa said the Kelantan BN placed high hopes, and would support, Awang Adek in furthering the agency’s role to transform the Bumiputera economy.

Mustapa, who is international trade and industry minister, also thanked Annuar Musa for his contributions as the previous Mara chairman.

Sabri, in a statement today, said the appointment of Awang Adek, 62, as the new Mara chairman was made after getting approval from the prime minister.

Awang Adek’s appointment as Mara chairman takes effect this Sept 1.

He will replace Annuar, whose term expired last Aug 4 and did not want to extend his contract for the post.

Annuar was appointed to the post on July 19, 2013. His contract was extended on Aug 12, 2015 and it ended last Friday, Aug 11.

Awang Adek was once a lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia from 1983 to 1985 and then joined Bank Negara until 2001, with his last post being assistant governor.

Awang Adek is Bachok Umno division chief.
