BUTTERWORTH: There is a reason why Umno has shifted the anti-Malay label once accorded to DAP, to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad instead.
According to DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, it is because Mahathir now has the courage to go against the party, which leads the ruling Barisan Nasional government.
“Mahathir has replaced us (DAP) as the enemy of Malays and Islam. Why?
“It is because Mahathir has the guts to fight Umno,” Lim said in a speech during the Jelajah Semarak 3M-Mahathir-Muhyiddin-Mukhriz ceramah held at the Seberang Perai Municipal Council field in Kepala Batas here last night.
Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, is believed to have said this in response to Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun who was reported yesterday as saying that Mahathir is the new “main enemy” of the Malays.
Khairul had said that this was because the former Umno president of more than two decades is going all out to destroy the party he himself once led.
Meanwhile, Lim mounted a full defence of his own party, against the allegations of it being anti-Islam and anti-Malay.
He said the Penang government had increased its Islamic affairs allocation by 84%, from RM250 million to RM450 million over the past nine years.
“Is that anti-Islam?
“Even MCA slammed me for increasing the allocation for Muslims. Are they not anti-Islam, anti-Malay?
“We in Pakatan Harapan take care of all races. We are not anti-anyone, we are only anti-corruption,” Lim said.
DAP has often been accused of being a “Chinese chauvinistic” party that is against the Malays.
Mahathir had admitted to playing up this sentiment when he was still part of Umno, but claimed it was merely part of his political strategy.
But ever since the 92-year-old set his sights on unseating Najib, Mahathir has repeatedly said that DAP is in fact a multiracial party that has been wrongly judged.
