Highways congested as thousands return home after long holidays

KUALA LUMPUR: The rush to return home to prepare for work after a long holiday has already begun.

Heavy traffic was reported along several major highways heading towards the federal capital this evening.

A spokesman at the Traffic Control Centre of the North South Expressway (PLUS) said as at 6.15pm, the expressway was congested from Gurun to Sungai Petani, Sungai Dua to Seberang Jaya, Bukit Tambun to Jawi and from Ipoh to Sungkai.

Traffic flow heading south was slow from Tangkak to Ayer Keroh and from Ayer Keroh to Seremban.

“The volume of vehicles is expected to continuously increase by night time,” he said when contacted.

Meanwhile, a Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) spokesman said traffic was also slow-moving on the East Coast Expressway (LPT) from Gombak to Genting Sempah, near the Gombak toll plaza.

Traffic was also slow but still under control from Lentang to the Gombak toll plaza and from Lancang to Bukit Tinggi.

The holidays coincided with Merdeka Day, Hari Raya Haji and the weekend. Tomorrow has also been declared a public holiday after Malaysia’s fantastic success at the 2017 SEA Games.

The public can obtain traffic updates via the toll-free Plusline at 1800-88-0000 and Twitter account at www.twitter.com/plustrafik or LLM line at 1800-88-7752 and its Twitter account at www.twitter.com/llminfotrafik.
