AMPANG: Wielding a sledgehammer, Umno’s showman-politician Jamal Yunos smashed a table at a news conference as a warning to the Selangor government to shut down gambling centres or face “extra-legal actions”.
“If the state government does not direct local councils to cancel licences for the gambling centres within two weeks, don’t blame us and our NGO friends if we act outside the law,” said the Sungai Besar Umno division chief.
He then proceeded to demonstrate the kind of action he planned to take by smashing a table at the office of the NGO Coalition which he leads, while members of the media and the coalition looked on.
“We believe in the law but if the law is blind and deaf…we who are literate and can see and hear must assume responsibility as NGO leaders in Selangor to stamp out misdeeds created by the menteri besar,” he said.
Jamal accused the state government of issuing too many family entertainment centre licences which led to the mushrooming of gambling machines.
He demanded to know how long menteri besar Azmin Ali wanted the Selangor people to be victimised by gambling operators.
Jamal threatened to hold an anti-gambling demonstration inside Bangunan Sultan Salahuddin, the centre of the state administration, in Shah Alam.
“This time when we come, we won’t demonstrate at the gate. We will do it inside the menteri besar’s office,” he said.
