MUAR: PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad has denied claims by Umno leaders that DAP will dominate a Pakatan Harapan (PH) government if the opposition wins the next general election (GE14).
Addressing PPBM members at the party’s first anniversary celebration here last night, Mahathir assured them that DAP could not possibly lead PH, just as MCA and MIC have never played a dominant role in the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN).
Mahathir, who quit Umno in February last year and later co-founded PPBM, said it was not possible because DAP only has slightly more elected representatives in the Dewan Rakyat than the total number of seats held by the Malay-majority opposition parties.
“Similarly, the number of non-Malay constituencies and elected representatives are not more than the Malay ones,” he said in his speech at the event which was attended by about 5,000 people.
The former prime minister said PPBM would also not engage in any rivalry with its fellow components in PH, adding that he was confident that DAP, PKR and Amanah would uphold the same stance.
“But we should strengthen and expand PPBM so that our support for PH will result in success,” he said.
“That is our aim. Personal interest has no place in our struggle. The goal of our struggle is only for the interest of the nation, people and religion,” he added.
He also said PH had three Malay parties but would not neglect the non-Malays and would always be fair to them
“The fair treatment of the non-Malays will be a part of our policy,” he said.
Umno leaders and the prime minister’s press secretary Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad have of late claimed that DAP is pulling the strings in the opposition and was the real power behind the pact.
Sariffuddin said DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang was using Mahathir to lead the party’s charge into the Malay heartlands to gain Malay votes.
He said a vote for Pakatan was a vote for DAP, and not PKR, Amanah or PPBM.
Mahathir, 92, also acknowledged that PPBM had weaknesses but said he was confident they would be surmounted.
“Yes, of course PPBM faces problems. But most of these have been, and will be, resolved,” he said, adding that they were convinced of their strength and ability to play an important role in the opposition alliance.
Mahathir added that Malaysia risked being colonised again if Prime Minister Najib Razak maintained his rule over the country after GE14.
He said the prime minister may become a puppet who moves and speaks according to the wishes of another party which he did not name.
