Man who attacked Italian couple not a Malaysian

PETALING JAYA: A man arrested by Italian police last Sunday for attacking a couple outside a mosque in Rome is not a Malaysian as reported by a foreign news portal.

An official at the Malaysian embassy in Rome said the report was wrong.

“The person is from Mali,” Norli Muadza Noor, a senior Malaysian diplomat at the embassy, told FMT.

Italian news portal Ansa had earlier reported that the man had confronted the couple for kissing near the mosque in Rome’s Esquilino quarter.

The man was alleged to have told them, “You can’t kiss in front of the mosque”, before pushing the young woman and attacking her male companion.

The report said the man also roughed up the policemen who detained him.
