GEORGE TOWN: A video of a woman being struck by a motorcycle at a signalised pedestrian crossing next to a school in Bayan Lepas here has gone viral on social media.
In the 30-second clip, the woman who is dressed in white, is in the midst of crossing the road when she is hit by a motorcyclist who brakes hard but fails to avoid her.
The woman is knocked off her feet and falls onto the road.
The video shows the motorcyclist stopping for a brief moment before speeding off.
Amazingly, the woman, appearing to be in a daze, stands up, dusts herself off and continues across the road.
The crossing appears to be on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah next to SJK (C) Kwang Hwa. According to the timestamp on the video, the accident occurred on Monday at 6.54pm.
Other cars on the road also appeared to have ignored the pedestrian crossing, despite the “green man” on the signal lights being clearly visible.
Police had not replied to requests for comment at the time of writing.
This is the second time such an accident on a pedestrian crossing has happened in Penang. In the previous incident in April, a 58-year-old woman in Pulau Tikus was killed after she was hit by a motorcyclist.
Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin said police must punish motorists who ignore pedestrians’ right of way.
“We were once a shining example where traffic rules were obeyed.
“I urge Penangites to learn from this incident and obey all traffic laws. We do not want this to ever happen again,” the Bayan Baru MP said in a statement.
