Derailment: SPAD to set up multi-agency safety investigation panel

KUALA LUMPUR: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is to set up a multi-agency safety investigation committee to determine the root cause behind the recent Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) rail incidents involving its cargo operation, and implement measures for improvement.

In a statement today, SPAD said the committee, which would be led by the commission itself, would have as representatives experts from various ministries, agencies and the relevant private sector.

It said the committee would be tasked, among others, to comprehensively review all framework, structures and processes and seek assurance that safety was accorded the highest attention and priority in KTMB operations and maintenance services.

The statement noted that SPAD was now in the midst of drawing up the terms of reference for the committee.

“SPAD intends to hold KTMB to the highest standards of operations and safety requirements. The creation of this multi-agency safety investigation committee is meant to push for greater transparency and accountability from the rail operator,” the statement said.

A KTMB cargo train derailed near the Bank Negara station here yesterday, while two derailments occurred last August.
