Admitting that he had been around too long in leading the youth wing, Khairy said the party had good young leaders who were not well known.
“It’s been hard for these other leaders to come out from under my shadow.
“I have given them the space and more of them are now being known and exposed and I think that’s just the start,” he said after wrapping up the Umno youth annual assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre here today.
Khairy became Umno Youth chief in 2009, when he defeated heavyweights Mukhriz Mahathir and Khir Toyo for the post. He retained the post in the last party polls in 2013.
According to Khairy, Umno Youth had also discussed the matter of party elections today.
“We already settled the decision on party elections today.
“The only thing we settled was that there would be no contests for the party’s president and deputy president posts because the Umno delegates want stability.
“As far as other positions in the party, that is a discussion for after the 14th general election,” he said, referring to GE14 which must be called within the next seven months.
