KUALA LUMPUR: Wanita Umno is willing to face opposition heavyweights in the 14th general election but will reject being offered to contest unwinnable seats, says Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
The Wanita Umno chief said the wing would even take on DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang and PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar in their constituencies but it did not want to be a sacrificial pawn.
“Politicians who want to win must be bold. We are not afraid even a bit.
“However, I don’t want Wanita candidates to be fielded in known ‘black’ areas to be made scrapegoats,” she said at a media conference on the sidelines of the Wanita Umno conference at Putra World Trade Centre today.
She was responding to media questions whether Wanita Umno was prepared to face off with Lim and Nurul Izzah.
Shahrizat is speculated to be fielded by Umno in GE14 after sitting out in GE13, following a statement by party vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that she might be given a “very important post” after the coming election.
The long-time parliamentarian failed to defend her Lembah Pantai seat in GE12 against newcomer Nurul Izzah, losing by 2,895 votes.
In GE13, she gave way to Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin who also lost to Nurul but succeeded in cutting her victory margin to 1,847 votes.
Shahrizat criticised Nurul Izzah’s performance in the constituency, claiming she failed to provide service to her constituents.
“I hear many opposition incumbents want to run away from their constituency, not sure whether it’s true or not, like Izzah in Lembah Pantai. The people there complained she was not serving them.
“I hear she doesn’t want to contest in Lembah Pantai. Better to give way to Nong Chik who is carrying out the duties of a people’s representative,” she said.
