PETALING JAYA: Zaid Ibrahim regrets the fact that the “bashing” Dr Mahathir Mohamad is getting from Umno is due to his own “mistake of retaining ungrateful ministers” when he was prime minister.
In a statement today, the lawyer-turned-politician said this was evident from the condemnation volleyed at the former Umno president and current opposition leader at the on-going Umno general assembly.
“Mahathir’s biggest mistake was to retain those ungrateful ministers, including (Prime Minister) Najib (Razak),” he said lamenting how “Mahathir bashing” seemed to be the main agenda since the party’s annual meeting started at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
In his keynote address to the delegates at the Umno general assembly today, Najib took aim at Mahathir saying that his predecessor’s “Melayu Mudah Lupa” (Malays forget easily) poem was in fact a reference to Mahathir himself.
“Mahathir once stood on this stage and proclaimed that Malays forget easily. Yet to us, this man has crossed the line by collaborating with his political enemies of a few decades,” he said.
Najib had also accused the PPBM chairman of trying to safeguard his personal interests by joining the opposition camp.
“When will Najib feel enough is enough as far as Mahathir-bashing goes? There was nothing presidential about the Umno president’s speech today,” Zaid said.
Zaid, who was a minister under the Abdullah Badawi administration, also said there was nothing of substance presented during the general assembly so far.
“For a party that dreams of being in power for another 1,000 years, it is bereft of anything remotely connected with lives of the people.
“No economic and social policies both short and long term were put forward. Neither was any hopes raised for Malaysians to cling to (in Najib’s speech today),” he said.
Zaid, who is a DAP member, then called out Najib for his “tacit approval” of the “violence” and other actions by some Umno leaders.
“Any president of Umno worth anything would feel embarrased by the violence and crass behaviour of leaders such as Noh Omar and Jamal Yunos. But there is not a word from Najib (against such behaviour).
“I believe such actions and more Mahathir-bashing will not end simply because Najib is insecure,” Zaid said.
