PETALING JAYA: The no-contest resolution for the president and deputy president’s posts passed by the ongoing Umno general assembly cannot stop a qualified party member from contesting under the party constitution, says a former Umno division leader.
Khairuddin Abu Hassan, who was sacked as Batu Kawan Umno division vice-chairman in 2015, said a member only needed to be up to date in his membership subscription and obtain enough nominations to qualify to contest any supreme council post he wanted.
“The resolution cannot supersede the (provisions of the) Umno constitution,” he said in a statement today.
The resolution, brought by Umno Youth, was passed unanimously by the assembly delegates today.
It paved the way for Umno president Najib Razak and vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is performing the duties of the deputy president, to continue leading the party after the next Umno polls.
Khairuddin blasted the party leaders and delegates for being cowards and naïve.
“The leaders and delegates are defending the wrongdoings of their president.
“I can’t understand it! Maybe the whole Umno institution is rotten!” he said.
He said they should defend the survival of the party, instead of a president alleged to be corrupt.
“The image of Umno is at rock bottom because of Najib Tun Razak.
“’Kerana nila setitik; habis rosak susu sebelanga!’
“Party leaders and delegates are spineless. They are afraid to speak up for the truth.”
