Christians in Sabah set for a rainy Christmas

The mood is set for the yuletide season in Sabah as the celebrations will see families, some comprising Muslims as well, coming together for the festivities.

KOTA KINABALU:
It is that time of the year when Christians in the country join their fellow faithfuls the world over to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas Day this Monday.

Christians in Sabah have already started celebrating as early as November with decorations put up to set the mood in malls, supermarkets, hotels and even in the middle of the field of Padang Merdeka.

However, the weather may dampen the spirit a little with heavy rains expected on Christmas Day.

It was reported that tropical storm Vinta (international name Tembin) is moving too close to home as it is now travelling through Zamboanga in the southern Philippines.

It is predicted to move just above the northern part of Sabah, but as usual, the locals are already bracing for the tail effects of the storm, which is intensifying into a severe tropical storm.

However, on a more positive note, the storm may be a good reason for families to stay together and have a more meaningful Christmas at home, instead of going out with friends.

And this family gathering, when speaking of Sabah, would usually mean a multi-religious affair as it is normal to see members belonging to different faiths under one roof, especially during religious festivals.

According to Fr Nicholas Stephen of St Peter Claver’s Catholic Church in Ranau, two weeks ago an elderly Muslim woman approached him to have a rosary blessed.

“I asked her why she wanted the rosary blessed and she replied that she used to be a Christian and she still misses our Lord Jesus Christ.

“She said she bought the rosary so she could give it to a relative who is a Christian,” he told FMT.

The photo of Fr Stephen, still in his priestly vestment, and the elderly woman, who was accompanied by a younger woman and a boy, has been shared online since last week.

Meanwhile, Sabah leaders, regardless of race or religion, took the opportunity to wish their fellow Sabahans a very Merry Christmas through strategically located billboards that line the main roads towards Kota Kinabalu and other Christian-majority areas.

The annual Christmas carols held at the five-star Pacific Sutera kicked off last night as young carolers sang their hearts out before a grand Christmas tree, beautifully decorated by the hotel.

Children also took the opportunity to greet Santa Claus with the hope of getting some candies while listening to the Christmas hymns.

It is indeed the most wonderful time of the year, regardless of the weather.
