PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has no plans to question Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in its probe into the proposed Penang undersea tunnel project.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki confirmed this when asked by FMT.
“To-date, there is no need to call up Lim Guan Eng,” he said.
The MACC launched its investigation into the project in 2016 following reports it received of alleged corruption.
Last Saturday, pro-Barisan Nasional Parti Cinta Malaysia lodged its second report on the project at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya claiming it had “new evidence”.
The MACC then raided the offices of the Penang Public Works Department, Penang State Secretary, Penang Lands and Mines and Penang Valuation and Property Services Department, and three property development and construction companies.
The companies are Ewein Zenith Sdn Bhd, 555 Capital Sdn Bhd and Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd’s Penang office.
Two “Datuks” were arrested following the raid and remanded for six days from Wednesday.
Lim said he was surprised by the MACC actions as it had investigated the tender process for the project in 2016 and found nothing wrong.
The open tender was overseen by international accounting firm KPMG, he said yesterday.
“We hope this is not because of the coming elections, and we hope this is not an attack by pro-Barisan Nasional forces against the state government,” he added.
The tunnel project is supposed to form part of the Penang Transport Masterplan to ease traffic congestion on the island.
