Girl accused of stealing teacher’s iPhone dies

Vasanthapiriya_600newGEORGE TOWN: The 13-year-old girl who attempted suicide after being accused of stealing her teacher’s iPhone died at the Seberang Jaya Hospital at 3.30am today.

Malaysian Tamilar Kural president David Marshel, who was with the teenager’s relatives at the hospital, said M Vasanthapiriya’s blood pressure had dropped last night.

“Her blood pressure dropped at 7.30pm last night. Then she was back to normal again. But at 3.30am, her blood pressure dropped again and she breathed her last,” he said when contacted.

On Jan 17, a teacher had accused the SMK Methodist Nibong Tebal student of stealing her iPhone 6.

The teacher allegedly confined Vasanthapiriya in her office, and threatened to lodge a police report if she did not own up.

Vasanthapiriya was then confined to a room for nearly five hours without a break.

The teacher and her husband later drove the girl home and met her parents, during which time Vasanthapiriya hanged herself with a shawl in her room.

She left a note saying, “I did not steal your phone, teacher.”
