PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad is expected to be discharged from the National Heart Institute (IJN) in a couple of days, said his daughter today.
Marina Mahathir said her father was recovering after receiving treatment for a chest infection following a bout of cough.
“He is fine. Basically, the doctors would prefer him to be there (in hospital) rather than travelling up and down,” she told FMT.
On Saturday, IJN had said in a statement that Mahathir was admitted to the general ward for treatment.
It said that the 92-year-old opposition leader would stay for several days at the hospital for treatment and observation.
Marina said she did not visit her father today but her mum, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, had visited him and said he was recovering.
When asked the cause of Mahathir’s illness, Marina said it was likely due to his hectic schedule.
She added that he would start campaigning again after Chinese New Year.
This is the second time in 19 months that the PPBM chairman has been warded at IJN for a chest infection. The last time he was admitted for treatment and observation was in August 2016.
Mahathir underwent a coronary bypass surgery in 1989. He had another heart bypass surgery in 2007.
Mahathir, who turns 93 in July, is Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for prime minister in the 14th general election. He was PM for 22 years before stepping down in 2003.
