KOTA KINABALU: Upko is the embodiment of the Kadazandusun. Hence, anyone belittling the party is actually looking down on the community, said the party’s acting president, Wilfred Madius Tangau.
He reminded detractors that the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation is a party that represents the struggles of the Kadazandusun Murut (KDM).
“I am aware of a certain opposition MP from the KDM community who has called for Upko to close shop. The call was repeated when his party came to Tuaran recently.
“But, I want to remind him that Upko is the embodiment of the Kadazandusun. If you try to hurt Upko by saying bad things, it means you are also hurting yourself,” said Tangau, who is Tuaran MP.
Speaking at the launch of Upko’s Kampung Dimbata branch here on Saturday, he said Upko had stayed true to its original objective of struggling for the rights and development of the Kadazandusun community.
Tangau said he was also aware of voices doubting Upko’s strength in the constituencies where it would be contesting.
On this matter, he concurred with Penampang Upko chief Donald Mojuntin that each Barisan Nasional (BN) component party had its own merits but, at the end of the day, all must respect the decision of the top leadership.
“Secondly, as a component party, it is our duty to help the BN candidate in all areas to win, irrespective of the candidate’s party,” he said.
Meanwhile, Tangau who is minister of science, technology and innovation, was elated with the formation of the Kampung Dimbata Upko branch under the Moyog Upko division.
Tangau received 74 membership applications from Mojuntin, who now heads the branch.
Among the applications received was from Albert Boyou, who, Tangau said, had never become a member despite being a staunch supporter of Upko for a long time.
“I am so happy that tonight he has decided to make it official by becoming a party member.”
He said he was confident the newly-formed Kampung Dimbata Upko branch would assist the BN election machinery, particularly in Moyog, in the coming general election.
