GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today praised traffic cops for going above and beyond their call of duty in helping to clear sand which had fallen from an overturned lorry on the Penang Bridge.
He was referring to an incident which occurred at 11.15am today when a lorry flipped over after it hit the screen fencing at Km7.6 on the island-bound lane.
According to a spokesman from PLUS Malaysia Berhad, the lorry scattered its contents on several lanes going to the island and mainland.
It resulted in a 6km crawl for traffic heading towards the island.
Lim said he was made to understand that the traffic police had taken the initiative to clear the sand.
“I would like to praise the traffic cops. This is actually not their job, but they went above and beyond their call of duty. I wish to congratulate the state police chief for having such personnel.
“In this incident, we saw how concerned the traffic cops were, making efforts to clear the sand so that vehicles can move quickly and the jam was not prolonged.
“This is the kind of attitude we want from everyone. When we see something like that, if we can help, we should help to solve the problem.
“I would like to encourage everyone to emulate these cops,” he told reporters today.
No one was injured in the incident.
