GEORGE TOWN: A factory supervisor died after he and his friends were struck by lightning at the Teluk Kumbar beach near here last night.

Mohamad Amin Osman, 47, died on the spot in the 10pm incident.

One of his friends was injured.

Southwest police chief Supt A Anbalagan said the victim and his friends were waiting for a boat to go fishing at Pulau Kendi when the incident occurred.

“According to one of his friends, it was raining heavily at the time.

“The impact of the lightning strike caused the victim to be hurled to the edge of the water.

“The two friends and several villagers tried to revive the victim but the medical response team which arrived at the scene found that the man was already dead,” he said.

Anbalagan said one of Amin’s friends suffered numbness in his hands and had been warded at the Penang Hospital.

The dead angler’s son, Muhamad Izdhar, 21, said his father had left home with his friends after performing the Maghrib prayers.

“He had been rather quiet of late. It had been a while since he last went fishing,” he said when met at the hospital mortuary.
