GEORGE TOWN: A foreigner clad in just his briefs was spotted strolling along Beach Street, in the heart of Penang’s financial district late Thursday afternoon, bringing traffic to a halt and causing a stir among passers-by.
The German man, who appeared to be in his late-50s, was talking to himself.
At one point, he was seen having an animated conversation with a row of metal barriers lining the street pavement.
As concerned passers-by tried to approach him, the man waved them off.
Two police patrol cars arrived at the scene and held him for questioning. Paramedics from the Civil Defence then took him to a private hospital for treatment.
Northeast district police chief Anuar Omar said the man was believed to be suffering from mental problems and might also have been drunk.
He said the German was a tourist and was staying at a hotel on Chulia Street Ghaut with his wife.
Anuar said police tracked down his wife and have also alerted the German consulate-general in Penang.
