KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Harapan candidates do not need Election Commission approval for using the PKR symbol, but they must only use the logo of the ticket under which they are campaigning, the commission explained today.
EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah issued a statement this morning to clarify the confusion which arose from news reports saying that Pakatan Harapan needed EC approval for using the PKR logo as planned.
In the statement, reported by Bernama, Hashim said he had only remarked that there could not be any use of any Pakatan Harapan logo if the coalition has not been registered by the Registrar of Societies and it had not registered a logo with the Election Commission.
“What was stated at the press conference was that if a candidate intends to compete on a PKR ticket, then only the party logo is allowed to be used during the general election for campaign purposes.
“Other party symbols cannot be used as campaign material. This would include the DAP, Amanah and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) symbols,” he said.
He said yesterday’s statement had been misconstrued to mean that use of PKR logo by members of other parties in the election must be approved by the EC.
