KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) has welcomed the May 9 polling date set by the Election Commission (EC), saying those who oppose it are merely unprepared for the 14th general election (GE14).
Abdul Rahim Ismail, who is chairman of the Sabah BN Backbenchers Club, said the opposition was unhappy with the election and nomination dates because their machinery was not yet ready.
“Certain opposition parties still don’t have their election machinery in all places. Or their election machinery hasn’t finished its work on the ground, getting support from the people,” he told FMT.
“They’re unlike BN, which was ready for the election much earlier.”
Rahim, who is also Pantai Manis assemblyman, said BN was ready for GE14 at any time.
“Our election machinery has been on the ground doing its work for a long time, so we would have been ready even if the EC had called for the election now.
“Even if the EC had set election day during the weekend, we wouldn’t have been unhappy. In fact, the sooner the election, the better.”
Nomination day is fixed on April 28, with the campaign period to run from then until May 8. Early voting will take place on May 5.
The May 9 polling date has come under fire from the opposition, who say the midweek election day will favour BN.
However, Semporna Umno information chief Ramlee Marahaban said he was satisfied with the 11-day campaign period set by the EC.
“The 11 days given for campaigning is enough for BN because BN had been working the ground much earlier,” he said.
“It’s more than enough time for us to continue working and to re-look and improve our approach where necessary to win the people’s hearts and minds.”
Ramlee, who is also assistant Sabah finance minister, said the opposition would not accept anything, even if it was good.
“The opposition won’t accept anything because they’re the opposition – they’ll oppose anything.
“Even if there’s something good, like the decision from the EC, an independent body, they will not agree.”
