Aeon Tebrau closes after TMJ’s cash cheer to shoppers

PETALING JAYA: The Aeon hypermarket in Jusco Tebrau City closed its doors today, a day after a surprise visit by Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim to announce his RM3,000 cash gift to every shopper there.

“The branch (at Tebrau, Johor) is closed until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” it said on its Facebook page.

Tunku Ismail, popularly known as TMJ, caused a stir yesterday when he appeared at the hypermarket and mingled with the public, before announcing that he would foot their grocery bills for the day.

It was reported that each person was given RM3,000, totalling some RM1 million given by TMJ.

“I’m no politician. I do not need votes. But I genuinely love my people. Always with you Bangsa Johor. I’m on Johor’s side,” the crown prince said in a Facebook post accompanied by pictures of him with the crowd.

When contacted, a spokesman for Aeon declined to comment on the reason for the store’s closure, but said they were in the midst of replenishing stock.

A picture of trolleys filled with goods and abandoned near the checkout counters at a hypermarket made the rounds on social media today.

But Aeon refused to verify the image, saying it was investigating the matter.
