Election day train and bus tickets sold out

Public transport options are running out fast for those wanting to vote in their hometowns.

KUALA LUMPUR: Railway and bus tickets for May 7-11 to the northern peninsula and Kelantan and Terengganu have been sold out.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad said ETS tickets from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh and other northern destinations were sold out within two hours after Tuesday’s announcement of the dates for nomination and polling.

The general election will be held on Wednesday May 9, with nominations accepted on Saturday April 28.

Express bus tickets were still available to other destinations, to the north and south, said Tajuddin Mohd Yunus, president of the Peninsular Express Bus Operators Association.

He said 35,000 tickets were made available for each day. However it would be up to bus lines whether to provide additional services to the two states.

Tajuddin advised those who had yet to buy their tickets to do so quickly instead of waiting until the last minute.

The railway said additional election train services would be provided, and an announcement made later.

One traveller, Tan Kok Yen, 67, said she managed to buy ETS tickets for May 7 from Kuala Lumpur to Parit Buntar, Perak, to enable her and her husband to go back to vote.

“I bought the tickets on Tuesday. I had planned to return home early with my husband,” she said.
