Pregnant woman rescued after falling on LRT track

KUALA LUMPUR: A system that immediately stops an approaching train saved a pregnant woman who fell on the Light Rail Transit (LRT) track early this morning.

In the incident which took place at 7.48am, the 26-year-old woman was waiting for a train at the Damai LRT station when she slipped and fell onto the track as a train was approaching the platform.

In a statement, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd said the station had been equipped with the Platform Intrusion Emergency Stop (PIES) system, which immediately halts an approaching train upon detecting an object on the track.

“The rescue team took about seven minutes to rescue the woman before bringing her to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment,” it said, adding that operations of the Kelana Jaya LRT line had resumed by 8.15am.

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd CEO Khairani Mohamed said the PIES system was installed at all stations along the Kelana Jaya line except those which were underground.

The system is also being installed at the Ampang and Sri Petaling LRT lines, with work scheduled to be completed by year-end.
