PETALING JAYA: Hindraf chairman P Waythamoorthy has called for calm and urged Indian voters to back PKR vice-president Xavier Jayakumar at the general election.
He said Xavier was not responsible for allocating seats for Hindraf candidates. “The decision whether Hindraf will be given seats to contest is the absolute discretion of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) top leadership.”
Waythamorthy urged supporters and wellwishers not to act based on their emotions but “look at the bigger picture”.
He said Pakatan Haparan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad has given assurances that he would speak to DAP and PKR leaders about making concessions.
Waythamoorthy issued the statement in response to a front-page editorial yesterday in the Tamil daily, Malaysia Nanban, which had questioned whether Xavier was a stumbling block to Hindraf being offered any seats to contest in the general election.
However, he assured supporters that Hindraf was certain of being involved.
Waythamoorthy said there would be a wave of support from the Indian community, especially in Malay-majority seats where the opposition had lost narrowly in the past.
“With PAS stealing away a portion of opposition voters and fielding Indians as well as their own PAS members in three-cornered contests, there is a need to ensure PH recaptures the extra 20% to 30% Indian votes that was lost in GE13. Hindraf is certain this is viable and can be done,” he said.
Hindraf urged its supporters to remain focused and to back PH irrespective of the final allocation of seats.
He also pledged to assist Xavier and urged voters to accept the latter as a PH candidate. “It is our duty to ensure all Pakatan candidates win in their seats comfortably,” he added.
