GEORGE TOWN: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today asked why the poster of a prime ministerial candidate could not be put up during the 14th general election campaign period.
He was referring to a new guideline issued by the Election Commission (EC) yesterday, saying it would only allow posters to feature party presidents and/or deputy presidents or their equivalent, as well as a select group of senior party leaders in larger banners.
“The decision not to allow posters of Dr Mahathir Mohamad to be put up is an attempt to cheat the electoral process, and to help Barisan Nasional (BN) steal the election.
“If posters of menteri besar and chief minister candidates can be put up in the respective states, it means that posters of prime ministerial candidates should be allowed as well.
“Do not forget, when Parliament or state legislative assembly is dissolved, there is no chief minister or a people’s representative. We are all equals,” he said at a press conference today.
On what Pakatan Harapan could do to overcome this matter, Lim said they could only continue to appeal to the EC and international observers.
“We hope the international observers can influence the EC, that it must be fair, not biased, not to stack the odds against us.
“A loaded dice is no dice. A loaded dice is no different from a cheat who wants to steal the election. I hope the EC will not behave in such an irresponsible manner,” he added.
The EC has required all political parties contesting in the coming election to obtain special permits for their campaign materials as part of additional requirements ahead of the campaign period.
It has also limited the pictures of political leaders which can be displayed on campaign materials to only those with the rank of president and deputy president, or their equivalent.
On larger banners showing multiple political leaders, only the president, deputy president, state chief and menteri besar, or the equivalent, can appear based on the registered logo or party used by the candidates.
The new requirements will be in effect throughout the campaign period from April 28 to May 8.
