KOTA BHARU: Two sons of former PAS spiritual leader, the late Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, are contesting in the May 9 polls, but for different political parties.

Nik Omar, who is the second son of the former Kelantan menteri besar, submitted his papers as PKR candidate for the Chempaka state seat.

This is a PAS stronghold and was won by Nik Aziz with a majority of 6,500 votes in the 13th general election in 2013.

Nik Omar’s younger brother, Nik Mohamad Abduh, who is the fifth sibling and incumbent Pasir Mas MP, is staying put in PAS and contesting the Bachok parliamentary seat.

In Chempaka, Nik Omar is involved in a three-cornered fight against Mohamed Fareez Noor Amran of Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS candidate Ahmad Fathan Mahmood @ Mahamad.

According to earlier reports, Nik Omar had wanted to join Amanah and stand as its candidate in GE14, but his mother, Tuan Sabariah Tuan Ishak, was against it.

Chempaka is one of the three state constituencies in the Pengkalan Chepa parliamentary constituency, besides Kijang and Panchor.

For the Kijang state seat, Wan Shahrul Azuan Wan Ab Aziz (BN) will be challenged by Nik Azmi Nik Man @ Nik Osman (PKR) and Dr Izani Husin (PAS).

In Panchor, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar and PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah is defending the state seat in a three-cornered fight against Zarian Md Eusope (BN) and Mohd Zulhazmi Hassan (PKR-Amanah).

For the Pengkalan Chepa parliamentary seat, Pengkalan Chepa Umno division chief Zaluzi Sulaiman (BN) will be challenged by Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PAS), who is the incumbent Bachok MP, and Mohamad Ibrahim (PKR).

Meanwhile, Nik Mohamad Abduh will face Bachok Umno division chief and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) chairman Awang Adik Hussin and Mohd Zulkifli Zakaria (PKR-PPBM) for the Bachok parliamentary seat.

In the last general election, Ahmad Marzuk won the Bachok parliamentary seat with a majority of 201 votes defeating Awang Adek.

The Bachok parliamentary constituency has three state seats under it, namely Tawang, Pantai Irama (formerly known as Perupok) and Jelawat.

The Tawang state seat will see a straight fight between Hassan Mohamood (PAS) and Mohd Radzuan Abdullah (BN).

The Pantai Irama state seat will witness a three-cornered fight involving Dr Ilias Husain (BN), Mohd Huzaimy Che Husin (PAS) and Ismail Ghani (PKR).

For the Jelawat state seat, it will also be a three-cornered fight involving Mohd Radzuan Hamat (BN), Abdul Azziz Kadir (PAS) and Mohd Fami Zakaria (PKR-PPBM).
