KOTA KINABALU: After a nerve-wracking time waiting to be confirmed as an election candidate, Jo-Anna Sue Henley Rampas of Parti Warisan Sabah is raring to hit the campaign trail.
The 29-year-old former beauty queen and model is the party’s youngest candidate in the general election after her nomination papers were accepted yesterday.
“It was an exhausting wait and stressful morning for me. The announcement came very late,” she told FMT. As she waited her mind raced wildly about what untoward fate might hit her nomination.
Rampas said she had to wait a long while before the official announcement of the candidates was made.
“I was thinking: ‘Please don’t let there be a technical issue’,” Rampas said, adding that the other candidates were also wondering why the announcement was being delayed.
Nerves were jangled further on news of the disqualification of PKR’s Tian Chua from defending the Batu parliamentary seat in Kuala Lumpur and PKR’s Dr Streram Sinnasamy being barred from entering the nomination centre for Rantau in Negeri Sembilan.
“We were told by election officials that the Sabah Election Commission office was scrutinising nominations across the state and that they were also using fax machines to send the papers… That’s why it was late,” Rampas said.
“But I’m thankful everything went well and I now look forward to the friendly contest with my opponents.”
Rampas, a member of Warisan’s Wirawati (young women’s) wing, is seeking election to Kiulu, about 50km from here.
“I am of course nervous because this is my first election as a candidate and this is a serious matter, but I’m raring to go,” she said. She will start immediately with house-to-house visits, and take part in ceramah.
“I am looking forward to meet all the constituents at the 17 polling district stations in Kiulu,” she said.
Rampas and three others will challenge Joniston Bangkuai of Parti Bersatu Sabah, who seeks re-election. The others are: Gaibin Ransoi (Parti Cinta Sabah) and Terence Sinti of Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR).
