KUCHING: The Bandar Kuching parliamentary seat has been described as the safest for DAP but its candidate, Dr Kelvin Yii, is not taking things for granted.
Yii, who will face off with SUPP Wanita leader Kho Teck Wan, called on opposition supporters in the constituency to turn up in full force to vote on May 9.
“We should never underestimate our opponents. I have respect for Kho Teck Wan. She is a first-timer like me and I wish her all the best”, he said.
Yii stressed that this was not a battle between DAP and SUPP, or even BN and PH.
“This is a battle between the people of Malaysia against corruption.
“Let us send a strong message and give a new future and give new hope for our future generations.”
Kho told reporters at the nomination centre that she intended to do a good job of the task given to her.
“I’m facing a tough fight but I will soldier on,” she said.
Kho, 41, is a IT consultant while Yii, 32, is a doctor.
Kuching pundits are giving the BN candidate zero chance of winning Bandar Kuching, a known opposition stronghold since the 1980s.
The late Sim Kwang Yang, popularly known by his initials “SKY”, first wrested Bandar Kuching from SUPP in the 1982 election.
He held on to it for three terms until 1995 when he was defeated by then Kuching mayor Song Swee Guan.
However, DAP’s Chong Chieng Jen won the seat in 2004 and successfully defended it in 2008 and 2013.
Chong has decided to move this time around to the riskier Stampin seat, where he will face SUPP president Dr Sim Kui Hian.
